It looked like the hose had been rubbing on the oil filter housing and had created a hole. Strangely, the hose wasn''t really touching the oil filter housing at that time. I decided to check our online technical information source for a BMW AirToolCluplers factory technical service bulletin that could shed some light on this problem.Great! There was a bulletin that covered this exact problem and here''s what it described:Some BMW M3 models, produced from September 1995 through June 1996, equipped with the M54, S50, or the S52 engine, may have an upper radiator hose that can come in contact with the oil filter housing only when the engine coolant is at operating temperature. The contact is due to coolant system pressure and expansion of the hose.Checking the clearance between the upper radiator hose and the oil filter housing must be performed when the engine is cold.

Another important thing to consider is minimum hub thickness, which is calculated based on such factors as locking device outer diameter and surface pressure. The hub should be thicker than this value to prevent excess stress and early failure. Locking device manufacturers typically provide this formula.Andrew/Whittet-Higgins: Consider all costs of the assembly rather than the individual costs of each component.Keith/U.S. Tsubaki: Go keyless. Keys and splines weaken the shaft by cutting into it, requiring a larger shaft and accompanying parts, such as bearings, to handle the higher forces.End-user adviceWhat should END USERS do to maximize life and productivity?Carl/Ringfeder: Pay close attention to the OEM''s service instructions and use the locking device manufacturer''s technical information to help with replacement or reinstallation. Warren/Fenner: In general, locking devices don''t require any maintenance or special attention to maintain their performance and maximum life.
